Physician Assessment - Phase II
|
Phase II of the assessment program is a minimum one-week clinical education program
provided at the UCSD Medical Center or one of its satellite clinics. It is
a formative assessment of the participant's clinical skills,
knowledge and judgment.
The results of the Phase I Assessment are used to help inform the scope and design
of Phase II. Each program will be individually tailored to the participant's
specialty and Phase I findings to the extent possible. As a result, Phase II programs will vary widely
by specialty and from participant to participant.
The following list represents elements that are common to many Phase II programs
(please note that this list is neither all-inclusive, nor are the items on the list
necessarily common to all Phase II programs):
- Clinical Observation
Depending on the participant's specialty, he/she will spend Phase II participating in clinically-based
education activities on the inpatient wards, in clinic, in the operating or procedure suite, and/or other clinical
settings of the UCSD Medical Center and UCSD Medical Group. All participants are required to keep detailed notes about the types of patients
seen and conferences and lectures attended.
Although the participating physician is not able to perform "hands-on" medicine,
he/she will be integrated into the day-to-day clinical education activities of his/her
specialty residency program.
- Departmental Conferences & Lectures
Grand Rounds lectures vary by week and are a part of many Phase II Programs. There are also many subspecialty
conferences that participants may attend.
- Evidence-Based Medicine Project
Physicians may be asked to complete an Evidence-Based Medicine Project. In some cases they will chose the topic
themselves and in others, a topic will be assigned to them.
- Further Evaluation
In addition to providing remedial education, Phase II is used to further evaluate physicians in the clinical
setting. This is achieved most commonly by way of case discussions of patients observed. However, some physicians
may undergo Standardized Patient Exams or be evaluated providing care on Sim Man.

At the conclusion of Phase II, a multidisciplinary staff
meeting is held to determine if the physician has completed the program satisfactorily or if
more evaluation, education, or
remediation is necessary.
